GHG® Pro Grade Duck Decoys by David Rearick
When it comes to realism, I was more than just surprised when I opened my first box of the new GHG® Duck Decoys. The Teal WOWED me, the Wood Ducks made me awestruck, and the Wigeon were love at first sight. GHG® has always IMO made the best looking most duck like decoys on the market, and these new decoys took it a step further. Combining color correct paint schemes that are detailed to replicate a real duck on the water and the addition of some many body postures and head positions took realism to the next step. No longer did I have just a decoy spread, I know how had an active flock of the most lifelike fakes I could have ever dreamed of. Testing these for the first year made me really appreciate just how much research and design time that GHG® puts into each of their decoys. "Good Enough" clearly isn't a word that the companies endorses, maybe a better fit would be "A Generation Beyond" as these decoys are clearly the best money can buy. Throughout a years worth of decoy sets, not only did these decoys impress on the water with their ability to tough out harsh wind and still maintain a natural look, they also held up to the rigors of a long season. In order to test the correctly, I didn't individual slot the decoys, I actually mixed them in large decoy bags tossing them from the bag to the water and reverse. Even with an extreme amount of paint detail, I am happy to say that all of the decoys look as good as they did when I first opened them up, minus a few bumps and bruises common with the territory. The only issue I encountered was self induced when a flock got too low and an errant pellet struck one of my mallards. Aside from a battered ego, I am happy to say he is doing fine after a small shoe goo patch job. As is always the case, I am looking to see what decoy companies have up their sleeve next, but after a years use of water with great paint retention, excellent natural appearance on the water, and the ability to make a spread come to life I am unsure how anyone could do better than this. With duck season 2010-11 just around the corner, I am ready to start floating bags and setting the first spread of the season.
